On Thursday 13th December the EVi at Ebbw Vale hosted Blaenau Gwent Youth Service’s Pre-Vent Project funded by the European Social Fund, Celebrating Success Evening; an award ceremony in recognition of the commitment and excellent achievement of the young people of Blaenau Gwent.

Throughout the evening the outstanding achievements of young people from across Blaenau Gwent were recognised through a series of award categories including; Attendance Award; Breaking Down Barriers Award for demonstrating progress through adversity; Community Award for efforts in volunteering and assisting at events; Employability Skills Award for efforts to attain employment or training; Further Learning Award in recognition of achieving accredited OCN’s, college enrolment or training; Personal Development Award for improvements in confidence, behaviour or attitude.

Young people participating on the Pre-Vent Project were actively involved in planning the awards ceremony and provided their own personal introductions to each of the award categories.

Young person, Jack Perkins said; “Pre-Vent has helped me with corporate training and given me the chance to make lots of positive changes in my life.”

Mel Wright, another young person added in their closing speech; “Pre-Vent is amazing, it gives us so many opportunities and the staff are really supportive – thank you all so much for what you do for us.”

Rhyan Mansfield Pre-Vent 14-19 Youth Worker said of the evening; “It was a wonderful evening that highlighted the remarkable achievements by the young people.”

Jo Sims, head of Blaenau Gwent Youth Service said; “We’re really pleased to see how young people are taking up the opportunities that are available to them through Pre-Vent and the Youth Service.  Young people often get much negative press and it’s really encouraging to see and hear about the good things they are doing.”

The Pre-Vent 14-19 Project uses a Youth Work approach in working with young people aged 14 - 19, who are at risk of becoming or are currently NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).  Young people are either referred or can self-refer onto the project and work in a voluntary capacity with our Pre-Vent Team, towards self-progression and preparation for education, employment and training.
