Tai Calon Community Housing

Tai Calon Community Housing

Tai Calon Community Housing is the largest social housing landlord in Blaenau Gwent –  we have more than 6,100 homes across the three valleys – including 11 Supported Living Schemes.

Tai Calon was created in July, 2010, after tenants of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council voted in favour of their homes being transferred to the new “not for profit” organisation.  We are also a community mutual … and tenants are at the heart of everything we do.

We have about 300 members of staff … from building trades to administrators and neighbourhood managers.  We are committed to creating as many job and work opportunities as possible.  We also aim to recruit locally as possibly.  We try to use firms and suppliers from the area, keeping as much of the income we generate within Blaenau Gwent for the benefit of everyone who lives and works in the county.

We have a number of values which all staff are expected to adhere to:

Our Mission

To deliver our promises, improving homes and lives

Our Vision

We will deliver excellent homes and services to make our communities proud

Our Values

We will:

  • Be tenant focused
  • Listen and learn
  • Be excellent
  • Show respect
  • Be open

We are spending £111 million bringing our homes up to Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS).  This was set by the Welsh Government and requires all social landlords, like us to improve our homes to what it has decided is an acceptable level by 2020.

This means that in many homes we are replacing kitchens and bathrooms, as well as renewing roofs, electrical and heating systems.

It is on target to be completed by the end of 2015 … and already six out of ten homes comply with WHQS.

We are continually looking at ways to help and support tenants … and indeed the wider community.  We give advice and support on everything from managing your money, fuel poverty, job and training opportunities as well as career development.

We have our own radio show on BRfm 97.3fm every Wednesday from 10am.  Every Tuesday at the Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr is Tai Calon Tuesday - tickets for all seats are £3.50.
